Mitzvah Day

LJW President  Ella Marks, “Mitzvah Day was a great opportunity for LJW members to do that little bit extra to help people in the local communities and it was also good to see our J-Mums groups getting involved.”

Bushey Group

Sunday 15th November was Mitzvah day literally meaning Good Deed Day.  It was a day when Jews up and down the country gave not their money, but a little of their time to help those less fortunate than themselves.

The Bushey LJW organised a tea party for residents of Heath House Elstree Road Bushey Heath on Monday afternoon 16th volunteers donated homemade cakes and visited the home for tea and entertainment which was greatly enjoyed by the residents.

The group also planted containers of spring bulbs for the grounds of the home and also for the Kennedy Leigh Centre Norwood.

Mitzvah Day falls at the start of Interfaith week and enjoys the support of the whole of the Jewish Community and the also the Christian, Sikh and Muslim groups who are involved in various projects across the country.

JMUMS

Two young babies each aged one year from the new J-Mums Finchley  playgroup were among  hundreds of League of Jewish Women members doing good deeds and voluntary work to mark Mitvah Day this week.

Babies Connie and Mazhiria delighted residents at Lady Sara Cohen especially  Bella who was 100 and Leon who was 97 by giving out cuddles and coos and presenting them with specially planted winter pansies. This was the LJW’s Blooming Mitzvah project where black pots were decorated with coloured stickers by the J-Mums toddlers Joshua, Nina, Isabel and Sophie at the LJW playgroups at  Lady Sara Cohen Finchley and Princess Alexandra Home Stanmore. The toddlers then planted these pots with winter pansies.

Northwood Group

LJW Northwood were delighted to host a Mitzvah Tea for members of the Association of Jewish Refugees at the lovely home of Sally Levinson where she, the Chairman of Northwood LJW Sheila Kempner, and 5 members and Lads were happy to welcome AJR members.

We all enjoyed the Tea and chatting with each other and it was interesting to learn that one of the AJR ladies now in her 90's came to England in 1938 and worked at the Foreign Office in 1943 whilst another aged 83 had recently had her Batmitzvah.  In response to a question about the formation of LJW Sheila said that in 1943 when Jewish women were working as volunteers in the war effort, some very far seeing Jewish women felt that a Jewish identity was needed amongst women’s voluntary welfare organisations and therefore LJW was formed.

Both AJR and LJW members really enjoyed the occasion and heartily commend Mitzvah Day.
