League of Jewish Women’s Literary Tea February 1, 2006
Restaurant Critic and Times columnist Giles Coren was the guest being interviewed by TV presenter Julia Carling at the League of Jewish Women’s Literary Tea held at Carpenters’ Hall.
The young, sexy Giles delighted over 150 League members who found his saucy humour and sharp intellect refreshing.
Julia quizzed him on all aspects of his life, enabling his audience to get behind the boyish charm. He spoke about his two recent awards ‘Food and Drink Writer of the Year for 2005’ and ‘the Bad Sex in Fiction Award’ for his first novel ‘Winkler’. “What does that say about me, that I am good at eating and drinking and bad at sex?” said Giles. He admitted the latter award did draw attention to the book although most people now turn to the featured page first!
Winkler, his lead character is a bitter, twisted, sexist, racist, misogynist. “It is a story about me. Winkler doesn’t know anything about being a Jew because I don’t. I grew up with stories from relatives about the Holocaust, or thought I did,” said Giles.
“ The tea was a great success, an exciting event in a wonderful venue and Julia and Giles complemented one another to make a very entertaining team,” said Penelope Conway, President of the League of Jewish Women.
