Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2006

Unsung Heroes

Baroness Helena Kennedy QC was the speaker at the League of Jewish Women’s 63rd AGM held at Friends House Euston on 21st June which was attended by more than 150 people

She was full of praise for the work of the League and its values and said it was important others were encouraged to follow this wonderful example, especially politicians. She spoke passionately about Human Rights and her fear that the Human Rights Act was under threat. She also stressed how important it was to tackle the political disillusion of young people and the need to empower individuals through the vote.

Penelope Conway the President of the League announced that she had agreed to stay on in the role for an extra year dur to a change in circumstances of the current chaiman of Executive.

Anne Finer Joint Honorary Treasurer reported that the first League sponsored event – walk a League had helped offset expenses.

Penny spoke of the importance of increasing League membership and urged members to encourage friends, family and colleagues to join and help expand the League’s work.

This year’s AGM was attended by representatives from over 26 outside organisations which included Macmillan Cancer Support and Help the Aged. Averill Moore the Chairman of the North West Region brought greetings and Vivienne Lewis the Chief Executive of World Jewish Relief gave the vote of thanks saying: “You are the unsung heroes and heroines of the community. The quality and breadth of work you carry out, which includes the valuable work in the wider community, is astounding.”
