Installation of New President - More pictures of
Ella Marks & Marilyn Brummer -

Ella Mark’s used her last
minutes as President of the League of Jewish Women to launch the new
LJW book ‘Service With a Smile’ before taking the chain of office off
and placing it round the neck of the 21st National
President Marilyn Brummer.
Marilyn was handed the Presidential chain
from Ella Marks who was stepping down after completing her three years
in office which culminates at what was the 67th
League of Jewish Women AGM held at Friends House in Euston this week.
Marilyn in her acceptance speech made
reference to the formidable founder member of the League comparing
them to Generals and the membership as foot soldiers.
But she said “today things are different we do
not order people to do things we ask. “
She mentioned that she was the third member
from the Oakwood and Winchmore Hill group to take on the Presidency.
The AGM was also used to launch the
new LJW book “ Service with a Smile” a 200 page history of the
LJW which puts in print the contribution that thousands of LJW
members had made to volunteering since the organization was founded
in 1943.
Addressing the membership
Marilyn said: “ The book introduces me as ‘the
future’ an enormous responsibility. It is only with your
help that I can succeed. “
Marilyn has said despite taking over
the Presidency she will continue as Chairman of her local group
Oakwood and Winchmore Hill and will continue with her weekly voluntary
work which includes working at Lady Sara Cohen house and the Ruth
Winston Fox Day Centre in Palmers Green.
The Launch of the Book

Ella Marks immediate past President and the
driving force behind the book Said: “I believe it is important
that there is a record of the contribution that LJW women as
representative of the Jewish community has made over the years
in helping so many people irrespective of their faith and
culture in the wider community . “
Gerry Black the author who spent two
painstaking years sifting through the archives and visiting
groups and individuals around the country said: “ I have been
greatly impressed by what my research has revealed “ . He continued “
The League’s history reflects, and to some extent has affected, the
changing status of women in the general community, in the Jewish
community and in the welfare services. “
LJW member Rosalind Preston, who wrote the
Foreword in the book, referred to the foundation and primary aims of
the League being created in the dark days of World War 11 in 1943
by far-sighted, energetic and highly motivated women of the
Jewish ‘establishment’ . She referred to these women as
“ the Cousinhood – many of whom had already been involved in the
campaign for votes for women, where a pattern for the future
structure of the new organization was set.”
All speakers said the book was an
uplifting read and shows that the LJW has been a powerful force
showing that everything is possible to Jewish women when they
are organised and working together to effect good or change.

UPDATE ON
CHIGWELL
AND HAINAULT
Our small but very
active group continues to provide rotas for help at the local
Hospital shop, Meals on Wheels, serving lunches at a local Shul
Friendship Club and a monthly tea at a Norwood Group Home for
Learning Disabled Adults. Our newest project has members knitting
squares for World Jewish Relief which are ably sewn into beautiful
blankets by one of our members. These are to give warmth and
comfort to desperately old and needy people in
Eastern Europe.
